How to effectively balance academics with other activities

Education goes beyond classes, books and assignments. Learning can occur anywhere, be it when you interact with your friends or even over the weekend doing your favorite activity. Academics comes first, while extracurricular activities are important. Undertaking extracurricular activities is a great way to develop team work, leadership, communication and time management skills. Therefore, a good balance between academics and extracurricular activities could see you develop into a well-rounded successful student.
However, balancing between academics and extracurricular activities is often challenging for students, most of whom focus more on one of them while neglecting another. An imbalance causes poor performance in one area but can lead to stress and anxiety in both.
Here you will find tips on how to keep a successful and healthy balance between academics and extracurricular activities:

Choose wisely: First, choose the right extracurricular activity for you. Take time to explore the extracurricular activities available to you and what you can gain from each one of them.

Get a schedule : It is important to make a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Plan out what needs to be done and when it needs to be finished. In your schedule, prioritize your activities so you do not leave anything important for less. When scheduling, be sure to schedule around your classes and to leave plenty of studying time before scheduling extracurricular activities.

Time management : Do not join every club or organization the campus offers, it will be a big drain on your time and chances. Plan ahead if the extracurricular activities you will be taking requires a lot of time. Learn to follow strictly the time scheduled for each activity. Consider making use of an alarm or digital calendar to serve as a reminder and also to avoid running out of time for activities.

Love what you do : Whatever activity you will engage in make sure you have passion for it. Make sure it’s what you want to do and love doing it, so as enable you to have right attitude towards it.

Be honest with yourself : I would advise that you should be honest with yourself and give yourself honest feedbacks in regards to your academics and extracurricular activities.  Learn how to make adjustments and to say No if you cannot handle any other activity no matter how much you want to.

Be organized always : Make sure you have everything you will be needing for the day always ready for grab when needed to avoid wasting a lot of time searching for things you will be needing instead of doing other things that matters.

Get a mentor : Get a trusted person to keep check on you. Someone who will always find a way to get you back on track whenever you want to sway, someone that will advise you, Someone you see as a role model. At some point in time, we always need help. We can’t do everything alone.  Get a mentor!

Take a break : All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. Schedule a time to go on a vacation, hang out with friends to have fun when needed. It shouldn’t always be about activities, sometimes we just need to have fun, eat good food and all.

You will find out that if you use this tips consistently, your school life will become more easier and enjoyable. Remember, extracurricular activities are as important as your academics. A great balance between the two is a great start to a successful life in future.
